Ireland 5/10/2013

From blogs of the past two days you realize that three tandem couples, without bikes, are in Kensale, the gourmet capital of Ireland.  So where do we have dinner?

From my first visit to Kensale, 21 years ago, I remember one dinner – maybe the best dinner I’ve ever had – certainly the best chicken I’ve ever had.  It was like a chicken breast, but it had both dark meat and light meat.  It was moist and juicy; probably had a sauce. But WHERE where WE?   WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT? I had no clue.

Today we searched for more good restaurants:  We searched Travel Advisor, the Cork and Kinsale travel guides. Also the Cork Co travelers bureau. We read menus. We asked people on the streets. They mostly unanimous recommendation was  the “Cracked Pot”.

2013-05-09 13.20.08So we went to Cracked-Pot (see photo).  After about 15 minutes – or maybe after the first glass of wine, things began to look familiar. The chairs. The tables and the table cloths. The restaurant layout.  And de’ ja vu – IS THIS IT?  Is this where I had the chicken 21 years ago? There is no chicken on tonight’s menu but this must be it. I’ll never know for sure but I’m pretty sure this is it. In any event, we enjoyed our dinner.

2013-05-09 15.00.09After last might’s great music at Blue Haven we looked forward to tonight’s “traditional Irish” music by “Arundo and Irish Dancers”. Unfortunately it was not the quality of last night’s professionalism not did it have the enthusiasm of a traditional Irish music night. The dancer was pretty good; but even there was something lacking here.

2013-05-10 04.27.42We return to Cork and the remainder of the tandem group joins us.  It’s time to think about the bike ride and first order of business is the unpack and assemble the bikes. This can be an easy or difficult job depending on many factors, such as how the TSA and airline treat our luggage.  And sometimes depends on what parts of tools we forgot to bring. All I forgot this time was a major part of the drum brake.  Oh well, who needs a drum brake?
